Clock Repair Tool List


Required Student Tool list for Clock Repair Courses 100, 200, 300 & 400

The student of the Clock Repair Classes is responsible for purchasing the following tools and bringing them on the first day of class. Each student needs to decide the quality of tools they want to buy. There are high quality (more expensive) and economy (lower cost) tools, and you usually get what you pay for. When purchasing higher quality hand tools look for brand names such as: Bergeon, Dumont, Swanstrom, Lindstrom, Corradi, Grobet, and Peer-Vigor. Sears Craftsman brand is also good and guaranteed. Economy tools are usually made in China, Pakistan or India and the steel is soft. Use your own judgment or experience in selecting the exact tool you may need based on the description below. This set of tools is a minimum required for the stated classes; it is acceptable to bring any other tool you want.

List of tools required for the basic Clock Repair Course 100:

  1. IMPORTANT, Student must bring the complete clock movement described in the class Overview that includes the pendulum, springs, suspension spring, etc.
  2. Box to hold movement and parts: Plastic shoebox with cover or cigar box.
  3. Stand to test the clock being repaired.
  4. Eye loupe, 2-1/2 power is ideal. Optivisor is a good brand.
  5. Files: 4" or 6" set of jeweler's files to include a Barrette file (a short thin #2 or #4 cut with one safe side).
  6. Hammers: Small ball peen and a brass head.
  7. Lamp for table mounting.
  8. Mainspring "C" Clamps (2). Class 100 class only.
  9. Movement holder (hanging assembly post kit).
  10. Oiler: Clock type with high quality oil.
  11. Optional: Jeweler's lathe (only if student has one, don't buy one for the class).
  12. Optional: Spring winder (only if student has one, don't buy one for the class).
  13. Paper towels (roll).
  14. Pencil and paper to take notes.
  15. Pivot locator.
  16. Pliers, small set: flat-smooth nose, long nose and diagonal cutters. (Buy good quality here)
  17. Screwdriver: 6"x1/8" slotted. (Jeweler's set works good).
  18. Spring letdown key set with handle.
  19. Tweezers (6 to 8 Inches Long).
  20. Vise, a quality 2-1/2" is ideal with an Anvil. (Palmgren drill press vise is ideal)
  21. Wrench: Small adjustable (or nut driver set).

Add these tools when taking Clock Repair Courses 200 & 300:

  1. Assortment of suspension springs for going barrel time/strike and chime clocks.
  2. Broaches (a set of 5-sided and a set of smoothing).
  3. Pin vise; set of 2 to 4.
  4. Pivot emery buffs (sand paper on a wooden stick or 600-1500 emery cloth with popsicle sticks).
  5. Saw: 1 to 5" deep jewelers saw frame with 12 - 2/0 saw blades.

For Clock Repair Course 400, bring all tools above plus add the items below:

  1. Beat amplifier or clock timer with beat amplifier
  2. Clock winding crank
  3. Stand for a weight clock that will test your weight driven movement (know where the pendulum mounts).
  4. Weights, cables and pendulum for the clock being repaired and tested.

  1. Mainspring winder & let down tool.
  2. Bushing tool & assortment of bushings from (.07 -2.75mm)
  3. Broaches cutting & smoothing
  4. Pliers as needed
  5. Tweezers
  6. Peg and pith wood
  7. Screw drivers: regular and jewlers
  8. Brass hammer
  9. Balance spring wire .070 (Timesavers is the only place that I have found it)
  10. Eye loops or goggles
  11. Fine Emory boards
  12. Hermle 340-020 movement

Carriage Clock Repair Tool List

Required Student Tool list for Carriage Clock Repair Class

  1. All tools required for Clock Repair 100 and Clock Repair 200 classes
  2. A quality watch oil
  3. Oil cup; TS #20045 or equivalent
  4. Oilier; TS #23295 or equivalent
  5. Screwdriver Set; TS #16971 or equivalent
  6. Peg wood; TS #10462
  7. Pith wood; TS #10459
  8. Tweezers; TS #19276; 3c or #5
  9. Loupe / Magnifier 3 and 5 power or a visor with 5 power
  10. Bench Blower; TS #15800 (This can be as simple as a baby bulb/syringe that is used to clean out nose matter. They are available at most drug stores.
  11. Movement Cover (1qt Tupperware container or equivalent)

Students that do not bring these tools will not be able to complete the class.  Students must also bring a working Carriage Clock.

400 Day Clock Repair Tool List


Required Student Tool list for 400 Day Clock Repair Class

  1. At least one 400-Day clock. This clock does not have to be working, but must be complete with all parts including the suspension spring assembly. Any make or model will do, try to be sure the mainspring is OK and has not had a broken mainspring in the past (look for bulged barrel).
  2. Horolovar 400-Day Clock Repair Guide, 10th Edition
  3. Paste brass polish, such as Dursol, Simichrome or Peek
  4. Cleaning and polishing rags (terry cloth, old T-shirts, well used 3M scrubbee pads)
  5. Rodico(TM)
  6. Round hardwood toothpicks (not bamboo)
  7. White cotton gloves
  8. Basic clock service and repair tools: Miniature pliers (gripping type, flat jaw, needlenose, sidecutter); Screwdriver assortment, blade width 1mm to 6mm; Large screwdriver or angle screwdriver with 8mm wide blade; Miniature file set, fine cut; small brass head hammer; Clamps (small C-clamps or parallel clamps)
  9. Letdown keys
  10. Mainspring winder (optional)
  11. Magnifying headset or loupe
  12. Precision Micrometer (must read or interpolate to 4 decimal places, either in inches or millimeters)
  13. Dial Caliper (should read to 3 significant figures)
  14. Pickup Amplifier (optional)
  15. Portable Dremel tool with cutoff wheels, brass and steel wheel brushes (Optional)

Pocket Watch Repair Tool List


Required Student Tool list for Pocket Watch Repair Class

  1. A 12 to 16 size movement. May be American or Swiss. May be 18 size if not a full plate type (balance on top). No complications. Should have no obvious broken parts or heavy rust.
  2. Loupe or Optivisor. 2 1/2 to 4 power with auxiliary lense for close examination.
  3. A set of flat screwdrivers. Favorite or Eurotool set of six , Bergeon set of 9 or 10, or French made copy recommended.
  4. Movement holder or ring.
  5. Recommended to build, or obtain, a 4 to 6 inch riser. Can be a simple box made with 2x4s and plywood 18"x18".

The Class coordinator or Chapter 124 will furnish the rest of the tools such as cleaning machines & solution, a staking set, a timer machine, let down keys, main spring winders, demagnetizer, oil, grease & One Dip for use during the class. The students are responsible for their own pocket watch parts.

Jeweler's Lathe II Tool List


Recommended Student Tool list for Jeweler's Lathe II

  1. Jeweler's Lathe (8 mm typically)
  2. Magnifier visor
  3. Light
  4. Extension cord
  5. Gravers (made in Jeweler's Lathe I Class)
  6. Collets (size 50 and 20 will be used)
  7. Micrometer or vernier caliper
  8. Pin vises (medium and larger, to hold 1/16" and 1/8")
  9. 3-4" square of plate glass
  10. Assorted sandpaper (500-1500 grit preferred)
  11. 10 weight oil for oiling Lathe and sharpening gravers
  12. Paper towels
  13. Medium flat-blade screw driver
